Road rules

By Henri Cormier

I have been paying attention lately to the habits that we pick up as our driving experience matures. There are many drivers that keep up their good habits. Automobile drivers that display bad driving habits stick out like a sore thumb.

Some of their driving habits show a lack of care for others sharing the road. They defend their tactics with statements like "I pay my taxes", "I'm bigger than the other car so I need more room", "people around here don't know how to drive".

Here are some tips and road rules that should be practiced if for no other reason than to be considerate of others.

1. Use signals when turning. A lot of drivers seem to have forgotten this rule, even police cars have been observed turning without signaling.

2. When making a left turn into a multiple lane, keep to the left lane. If you want to go to the curb lane, you should signal your intention then proceed. This will allow vehicles across the intersection to make a right turn, thus avoiding getting the bird.

3. Observe the posted speed when conditions are good, or pull over and let traffic get by. This means that Sunday driving is ok if you are not holding back traffic. This can irritate the impatient driver and cause an accident.

These are three of the most abused rules of the road I observed in the past few months. Sometimes we develop habits and are not even aware until someone points them out.

Be courteous, you are not alone on the road!
