Directions from New Brunswick to Florida

Getting from Moncton NB to Florida.

If you ask 10 people how to get to Florida you will get 10 different routes. There are routes that will get you through major highways, some will get you to avoid tolls, bridges or tunnels. Some people will guide you through all interstate roads or split highways because they don't like to meet oncoming traffic.

Personally, I like to have a mix of highways, sightseeing off roads, and an exit where some leisure is allowed.

Now, when you leave for Florida, I assume that most snowbirds head out when the snow season starts. I like to make time on the first day so I stay on Trans Canada highway all the way to the Houlton, Maine border. I follow Interstate 95 to bypass 295, which will avoid some tolls. This will take you back to Interstate 95 in Portland Maine, where you will have to pay tolls, unless you decide to take route 1 through to New Hampshire. Look for the exit for Interstate 495 that will border around the Boston area. When you get to the exit for highway 290 south, you may have to make a decision, this is where a multiple choice will take you from minor to major traffic, tolls, bridges and mountain range.

290 turns into 395 at some point, and this will take you back to 95 south. If you don't like to drive through New York Interstate 95, you can veer off at the exit for 287, Tappan Zee Bridge. There are no tolls to pay if you drive a car, but there is a $6.00 or so toll to pay if you have some sort of recreational vehicle. Follow 287 to 87 south until you get to Interstate 78. Here, you have another multiple choice. Route 202 will take you to route 31 south, which is the old trucker's route, which in turn will take you to Intersate 95 North (195 south to 295). You will end up at the Delaware Bay Bridge, (no fee for southbound traffic). You will merge to Interstate 95 a few miles after you cross the bridge, now look for route 896 that will take you to route 301. This route will turn into Interstate 50 a few miles before the Chesapeake Bay Bridge where you will be very careful and not miss the exit for route 301, (you may not want to drive into Washington).

Now you will be on your way on route 301 where there are many places to stop and stretch your legs. Most of route 202, route 31 and route 301 is divided highway with some areas controlled by traffic lights. The traffic flows pretty good and there are plenty of sights to behold.

When you get to Bowling Green, look for route 207. This will take you back to route 95 just above Richmond Virginia. I do not take the 295 bypass at Richmond, it is faster and smooth sailing if you stay on Interstate 95.

Well, put your feet on the dash, slap on cruise control and steer south on Intersate 95 right through to Florida.

You may map this out through various automobile or RV clubs, or, Google map it, print and enjoy. This route avoids all major hills and most big city traffic. My fuel consumption was $200.00 less than any of the other 5 units that completed other routes on this year's return trip. This savings paid for my GPS (this will be another intel).
